Is the above encoding correct? It does not decode to my 7-character
sequence. Rather, in place of each of the lower-case, accented a's, it
displays a two-character sequence, namely, the ISO-8859-1 characters
corresponding to the hex byte codes (emacs 21.1, Latin-9 language
environment, enable-multibyte-characters=nil, semi et al.).
