(I think you may know what happened since you are skilled
 programmer. :-p)

The FLIM version of smtpmail.el uses smtp.el and there's the
option `smtp-server' which is apt to be nil by default.  You
seem to be successful in sending queued mails if you specify
the proper SMTP server name for this option.  How is it?
