    How about mime-play-delete-file-immediately?

Well, that certainly solves the immediate problem. Thanks!

Now, that leaves the problem of the files being left behind. I realize
this might be difficult because it involves cooperation between
emacs-mime and the mail client. Any way to attach a hook to wl (or
another client) to do one of the following (both would seem useful):

- when the focus is changed to another message, delete all the temp
  files associated with the first message;
- when the mail client is quit, delete all the temp files generated in
  that session of the mailer.

?

(Also, it appears that if I visit the mime attachment more than once,
it makes multiple temp copies instead of keeping the one already
there; this is not desirable.)

Your reply is very much appreciated - thanks for the pointer!
