Checking out HEAD seem to work, but checking out any other revision
seem to fail.

$ cvs -d :pserver:anonymous at cvs.m17n.org:/cvs/root checkout -r slim-1_13_5 flim
cvs [server aborted]: cannot write /cvs/root/CVSROOT/val-tags: Permission denied
$
